From Boredom Scrolls to Book Pages: Reading, By Dela Cruz
From Boredom Scrolls to Book Pages: Reading, By Dela Cruz
During the pandemic, I started looking into books and even social media out of boredom since I had nothing else to fixate on, and that was when reading slowly became my hobby. I wasn’t really the type to read or spend much time daydreaming or analyzing words because of my short attention span, so at first, I only leaned toward self-help books, existentialism, and literature since I was philosophically inclined.
Eventually, I got tired of the formality in those books, and reading them even made me think like an old man at 15. Out of curiosity, I tried reading an AU I stumbled upon on Twitter, and after finishing 200 slides in one sitting, I realized I had finally found something that made reading enjoyable for me .
Since then, I started exploring more genres and combining this hobby with multimedia elements like scrolling through online discussions, watching author interviews, and listening to book-related podcasts whenever I can’t find friends who have read the same thing.
Since I used to struggle with empathy, living through the characters’ stories helped me practice putting myself in other people’s shoes, reading improved my imagination and vocabulary, and helped me become more patient and understanding. It taught me how to deal with people. Moving forward, I’ll probably just keep checking out different genres, maybe even classics or non-fiction if I don’t get bored, and if ever I share my thoughts, it’d be more through something lowkey like a blog.
